Crowns

A crown is a covering or cap that fits over the whole tooth. It is a restoration that protects damaged, decayed or broken down teeth. A crown strengthens the existing, weakened tooth so as to preserve its function and improve its appearance.

A crown can also be fitted onto to an implant to replace a missing tooth or a number of implants to replace many missing teeth where it feels just like your own tooth.

Modern crowns are made from natural looking ceramic materials that give a realistic, vital, translucent appearance closely matching that of natural teeth. Some crowns, usually on back teeth, are made from a gold alloy while others have a metal substructure covered with ceramic.

What does the process involve?

A diagnostic wax-up is sometimes made, please refer to the narrative in the veneer section for details, if multiple crowns are to be created.

When only one or two crowns are required the involved teeth are prepared and shaped to accept the new crowns. Impressions are made and temporary crowns fitted.

At the next appointment the temporary crowns are removed, the definitive crowns tried in and checked. When everything is correct the crowns are cemented in place.

Testimonial

"Every stage of my treatment was explained very clearly, with plenty of opportunities for questions to be answered.

The whole implant procedure was relatively painless. I am delighted that the crown on the implant looks and feels like a normal tooth. Thank you Andrew."
